Techweek was born in the upper North Island - it launched as TechweekAKL in 2016. Now that it's expanded nationwide, the Techweek’17 programme has stretched its fingers right up to the very northern tip of the country, and down into the depths of the Waikato. Check out the full programme here.

NORTHLAND

Northland is going off for Techweek’17 with a full programme of events all about showcasing the region's growing tech ecosystem. Dive in with the fun, interactive event, Grunge Bots, a full day in which you will build a fully programmable mobile robot.

WHANGAREI

Whangarei is an early stop for the OMGTech!’s Trailblazers event series: a nationwide programme of workshops designed to upskill teachers in STEM subjects and digital technology. In partnership with Microsoft, this is a fun, hands-on workshop for teachers of Years 3-8 students.

AUCKLAND

As the orginal home of Techweek, it’s no surprise that Auckland is hosting an amazing 77 events during Techweek’17, in part due to the hard work of our partners at ATEED. Check out the full Auckland programme here. Here are a few highlights:

On Sunday, Techweek begins with Magnify AR/VR’s public showcase – showing off the latest entertainment technology that’s set to change the way we spend our leisure time. The following day, the summit opens up for businesses interested in this new technology.

Techweek’17 is so proud to include TheBlockchain.NZ in this year’s programme, sure to be one of the most important conferences on blockchain technology in the world this year. It includes world-leading speakers on the subject, including the founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, and Andreas Antonopolous. Don’t miss out on tickets to this one, the blockchain is going to change the way the world works.

In the first of KEA’s Techweek’17 Inspire the Future breakfast series, The Future of Money will continue the conversation on cryptocurrencies and the future of FinTech.

Techweek sees a number of events designed to assist startups and founders in going global. Techweek’17 partner NZTE is running NZ8 Basecamp on Friday 12 May, all about scaling for the North American market, and Kiwi Tech | Going Global will present the multitude of opportunities for NZ startups in the UK and European markets.

Techweek has proven a great inspiration for special editions of regular, well-loved events, including Hardware Meetup Auckland, who are running an Aerospace event featuring speakers from RocketLab and Singularity University. Similarly, Startup Grind Auckland will feature local innovators and chapter directors from the global Startup Grind community, all offering insights into their journeys of international expansion.

In a quiet corner of Auckland’s Parnell, legendary innovation ‘corridor’, Level Two, will open to the public for the first time, offering an exciting chance to meet the next generation of world-changing innovators currently working in the space. In another first, the MaD for the Future conference will bring together delegates from the manufacturing industry, government and Crown Research insititutes to connect and collaborate on world-changing innovations in manufacturing and design.

At Future Realities, a headline event running from 10-13 May in Auckland and Wellington, you’ll be able to see celebrated science fiction author and futurist Neal Stephenson speak, alongside leaders in the fields of mixed reality and the internet of things (IoT). They’re calling it ‘the least boring Tech conference you could possibly attend,’ and we can see why. Earlybird tickets are still available here >>.

Datacom’s AI: Reimagining Customer Engagement event will offer real examples of AI benefiting customer experience, and will feature FaceMe founder Danny Tomsett talking about increasing the emotional intelligence of AI to create ‘human-like’ interactions between business and consumer.

Also in Auckland, DIGMYIDEA returns, the Māori Innovation Challenge’s final weekend coincides with Techweek’17, and will sees teams develop business ideas with the guidance of industry mentors.

For those interested in the connection between emerging technology, design and indigenous cultures, the Media Design School is holding a conference on the subject on Wednesday 10 May, with fascinating speakers from education institutions across NZ and Australia.

Once again, Techweek coincides with the 2017 NZ Hi-Tech Awards, and this year’s incredible list of finalists includes a whole range of innovative and world-leading NZ companies, including peer-to-peer lending marketplace, Harmoney, and ARDA, an AI coaching platform for exercise, among many more. You can still get tickets to the Gala Dinner on 12 May.

TAURANGA

Techweek'17 city partner Tauranga’s week begins with Mashup, an event for school-aged entrepreneurs where teams of four students have 48 hours to mash tech and business skills in order to find a customer, develop a product idea, create a business plan, and build a prototype - all with the help of awesome mentors.

Access Granted, one of the country’s premiere tech-focused podcasts, is on the road during Techweek, and on Saturday 6 May they’re stopping by the Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology to talk to local tech talent.

Tauranga is also hosting a range of events designed to encourage growth in young businesses, including the Design Thinking Meetup, Technology for Smarter Business Expo, Tauranga Web Meetup and the launch of the Digital Enablement Project.

National Coworking Day on the 11th will see Basestation and Ignition Coworking Space open their doors to those who are interested to see how a space like this works, and discovering the many benefits that come from working alongside like-minded people.

Tauranga’s Techweek will close with Celebratech, an evening event showcasing local expertise and innovation in the fields of technology, entertainment and more.

ROTORUA

Over the hills in Rotorua, another great city partner of Techweek'17, the programme is all about events for Māori youth. There’s a 48hr livestream animation hack for young wāhine, during which they’ll develop storylines and characters. Digital Native’s Academy is running Taniwha Tech – a series of hour-length workshops taking youth through the basics of coding, robotics, animation and more. There are also thought-provoking discussions about ways to encourage Māori to engage with NZ’s tech ecosystem, and ways to grow and shape the Māori Technoverse.

The OMGTech! Trailblazers will be coming to Rotorua on 10 May to upskill teachers in STEM and digital tech subjects, and National Coworking Day gives locals a chance to tour Digital Basecamp.

HAMILTON

Another wonderful city partner, Hamilton plays host to one of Techweek'17's feature events, Farming 2020, which is located at the LIC Innovation Farm in Ohaupo. This 3 day, free event will see early stage start-ups displaying the latest technology alongside the biggest industry players. Head along to find out about agriculture's digital future.

Back in the city, watch out for the OMGTech! Trailblazers, arriving on Monday. National Coworking Day will give you a chance to look around The Space, and a Game Developers Meetup run by the NZGDA will be held at University of Waikato's Innovation Station on 11 May.

TAUPO

The Access Granted podcast will arrive to Talk Techweek Everywhere in Taupo on Sunday 7 May at the Kloud Collective, make sure you turn up for a chance to talk Tech in your area. Head back to the Kloud on 11 May for National Coworking Day.
